Registered Nurse
Norma retired from U.S. Borax in 1989 after 29 years with the company.
Norma started at U.S. Borax in March 1960. As one of two nurses on-site, Norma spent a lot of time handling eye, hearing, and respiratory pre-employment tests. "There were first aid calls," she remembers. "Cuts, burns, sprains, and even a broken bone or two—sometimes in the middle of the night. We were the first responders."
Retiring with nearly three decades at the mine, today Norma encourages young women to get an education above all else. "Regardless of what happens in life, no one can take that away from you. I may be 93 years old, but I'm still a nurse."
