U.S. Borax Global Supply Chain and Regulatory Support

World-class distribution and stewardship

Right Product, Right Time, Right Price

With customers in nearly 100 countries, U.S. Borax—a part of the Rio Tinto Group—is a world-class leader in distributing industrial minerals. Our distribution experience dates to the 1880s, when our company’s founders pioneered the use of 20-mule teams to haul borates out of Death Valley, California. The 20-mule teams that our predecessors used to haul ore out of the remote desert live on as a symbol of our company’s commitment to supply-chain innovation.

Today, our supply chain team is devoted to safely and ethically delivering the right 20 Mule Team® Borax product, at the right time and at the right price. To accomplish this objective, we focus on successful communication, effective relationships, sustainable and safe processes, and dynamic planning. Our ultimate goal? To meet the needs of our customers.

Boron products

Global distribution of 20 Mule Team Borax products

From our principal mine in Boron, California, U.S. Borax supplies our customers by a variety of methods to meet customer needs. Whether by rail, vessel, or truck, our products leave our California and European processing facilities and ship directly to customers or via our various stock points around the world.

Product stewardship and regulatory affairs

U.S. Borax and our parent company, Rio Tinto, have a well-established, global team of dedicated in-house experts in regulatory affairs and product stewardship. Our team protects access for our products globally and advises customers throughout the world.

We provide global leadership to the industry on all regulatory affairs matters through the world’s only borate industry association—the European Borate Association—in which we hold executive roles. Our staff includes the borate industry’s global toxicological expert.

To ensure that our standards and practices meet or exceed product stewardship and safety standards everywhere we do business, we employ the best available technology and follow exacting procedures. We conduct or support research that contributes to the existing body of knowledge. And we share data with customers, to help them develop better products and processes and ensure compliance, and with regulators, to develop better public policy.

We provide direct support to our customers through both advisory and hands-on services in the following areas:

  • Product registration support
  • Product regulatory affairs and compliance support
  • Only Representative (OR) service (in Europe)
  • Product health and safety support
    • Development of Safety Data Sheets (SDSs)
    • Guidance on proper handling and use of our products
    • Worker training for safe handling
