New article explores circular raw materials for glass sustainability

That’s why I’m pleased to contribute an editorial to Glass International  where I discuss the importance of exploring others circular raw materials in glassmaking. Here are some highlights:

Glassmakers are embracing the circular economy

With cullet supply facing constraints, the glass industry could benefit from exploring additional sustainable circular materials, derived through nontraditional sources such as mining byproducts, byproducts, intermediate products and industrial waste streams.

Alternative circular raw materials for glass

There are broadly three types of materials being explored as viable cullet alternatives in glassmaking: Mixed oxides, salts, and naturally-occurring minerals. Each impart unique benefits:

  • Oxides reduce CO2 by eliminating carbonates and cost reduction

  • Salts allows process efficiency and regional collaboration

  • Minerals provide silica alternatives and opportunity for resources regeneration

Collaboration is key to success

Collaboration among mining companies and downstream partners will be key to integrating circular materials into glass manufacturing and ultimately, paving a more sustainable future.
