TIM-BOR

Tim-Bor

Industrial wood protection

This industrial, high-performance wood preservative is ideal for protecting rafters, cladding, and joinery against insects and decay.

Timbor and Wood Plastic Composites (WPC)

Designed for Maximum Solubility

Tim-bor® high-performance borate wood preservative has been specially designed to provide the highest concentration of boron at the maximum possible solubility and rate of dissolution in water. Wood treated with Tim-bor can be used for a variety of purposes, such as trussed rafters, studding, cladding, and exterior joinery.

APPLICATION AND BENEFITS

Tim-bor combines a broad spectrum of efficacy and low acute mammalian toxicity. The product has proven efficacy against wood decay fungi, wood boring beetles, and termites. In addition, it contains no organic or heavy-metal components or organic solvents.

Tim-bor has a well-known and proven record of performance in the United States, Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. The product’s performance has been demonstrated by independent laboratory and field studies carried out by universities and government testing facilities around the world. (The use of Tim-bor varies according to working requirements and country- or market-specific product labels.)

You can apply Tim-bor as a pretreatment to dry (via vacuum-pressure processes) or green (via vacuum-pressure processes or dip diffusion) timber. The ability to treat green timber successfully and the subsequent diffusion of borates in wood enables penetration of species that are known to be difficult to treat, such as Douglas fir, spruce, and many hardwoods.

Wood treated with Tim-bor retains its natural appearance and strength. Tim-bor treatment has little or no effect on ferrous metals, plastics, rubber, putties, bituminous solutions, other sealants, or primer paints.

FACT
Borates make excellent preservatives of wood composites because they are efficient in protecting against both fungi and insects, fire retardant at higher loadings, low cost, easy to handle, and have low toxicity and minimal environmental impact.

Tim-bor APPLICATIONS
Since the 1980s, Tim-bor has been used to safeguard historic mansions in the French Quarter of New Orleans, in particular, the Upper and Lower Pontalba Buildings, which comprise 120,000 square feet of architectural heritage. Termite-infested wood was replaced with Tim-bor-dipped wood, providing virtually permanent protection. Other portions of the buildings’ wood construction were treated through spraying, injection, and dusting of Tim-bor.

TECHNICAL DETAILS

Aqueous solutions of Tim-bor range from mildly alkaline (at low concentrations) to approximately neutral (at higher concentrations).

Wood treated with Tim-bor Industrial is not suitable for ground contact applications and should be protected with a water-repellent coating when used in exterior applications (eg, joinery, fascia).
