STRENGTH OF BORATE-TREATED WOOD

Strength and Mechanical Properties
Lumber is pressure treated with borates to a level of 0.28 pounds B2O3 per cubic foot (pcf) for protection against Formosan termites, or to lower levels for protection against other wood destroying organisms. The National Design Specification (NDS) for Wood Construction (1997 edition) allows wood that has been pressure treated with borates according to AWPA standard C31 to levels of 0.3 pcf B2O3 or less to use the same design values as untreated wood.
