TELEPHONE POLES

Poles often undergo long air seasoning periods prior to treatment with creosote. During this drying cycle, fungal infection can occur - leading to incomplete treatment and, in some situations, resulting in premature failure in service. Treaters can also rely on kiln drying to prevent decay and sterilize the timber prior to creosote treatment. Kiln drying poles, however, is an expensive process, requiring massive drying ovens and often leading to excessive bleeding after treatment.
A major study in the United Kingdom was launched to precisely measure the problems associated with air drying poles prior to creosote treatment, and to develop solutions. The researchers found that treating poles with a 30 percent borate solution is effective in preventing infection for up to 18 months; they recommend spraying timber immediately after peeling, and within two weeks of felling. Subsequent research suggests that even lower concentrations are effective. Borate treatment has been demonstrated commercially in Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States. Borates may also be effective controlling lyctus attack in eucalyptus poles during seasoning.
