As standards become
more rigorous, so do our efforts to meet them.
This year, we are reporting a broader range of
data in accordance with a globally-recognized protocol
called the Global
Reporting Initiative (GRI) Sustainability
Reporting Guidelines. We used the most recent
GRI Sustainability Reporting Guidelines to prepare
our report, released in 2002.
Our parent company Rio Tinto, as a member of
the International Council for Metals and Mining
(ICMM), is currently working with the GRI to
develop a Mining and Metals Sector Supplement.
The process to develop the Supplement is following
the GRI's due process requirements for a global,
multi-stakeholder, consensus-based approach.
The scope of work focuses on economic, environmental,
and social performance indicators specific to
the mining, minerals, and metals industry. A
draft for public comment is expected by June
2004. During 2003 Rio Tinto also participated
in the GRI's Structured Feedback Process on the
2002 Guidelines.
The left navigation menu provides a guide as
to how Borax's reporting activities incorporate
both the recommended principles and indicators
as outlined in the Guidelines. For each element
of the guidelines we provide a link to the location
in the 2003 Report on Sustainability where the
information can be found. In some cases, such
as many of the economic indicators, we provide
a direct link to the location of the information
or data on Rio Tinto’s 2003 Social and
Environment Review website.
