Our business involves earthmoving equipment and explosives, machinery and confined spaces, heat, noise, dust and other potential dangers. Even driving to work every day represents risk for most of our employees. Because people are our most precious resource, our first sustainable development objective is to protect the safety and health of employees, contractors, neighboring communities and the public.
Borax's relentless focus on health and safety has paid off. In 2003, we achieved our best safety record in company history. That record was recognized by our parent company, Rio Tinto, through its 2003 Chief Executive Safety Award, signifying the best safety performance among Rio Tinto's nearly 80 worldwide mining operations. The U.S. Department of Labor's Mine, Safety and Health Administration - in conjunction with the Industrial Minerals Association of North America - also recognized Borax for achieving the best safety record among large U.S. mining operations in 2003
Now our challenge is to go beyond our already excellent performance to reach our goals of working without incident or injury, and making safe behavior part of our culture. The company's three primary paths are: raising safety consciousness, improving safety skills and instituting systems to make the workplace safer. Important program aspects include:

Representation - Borax's Global Executive Health & Safety Commitee is...

Accountability - Borax employees commit to safety in word and deed.

Internal Performance - In 2003, our workforce suffered no disabling injuries or fatalities.

External Performance - Borax also measures its health and safety performance...

Creating a Sustainable Safety Culture
Our safety performance places us among the best in the world, but statistics don't mean much when someone you care about suffers an injury.

How Dusty is Too Dusty?
A healthy workplace requires attention to numerous aspects, including exposure to chemicals and products.
