Regulatory Compliance
In 2003, Borax met its goal of zero violations of environmental regulations; we also gained approval of expansion plans at our primary mine in California

In 2003, two spills totaling 23,000 gallons of refinery effluent occurred at our principal mining and refining operation. While we reported the spills immediately, neither constituted regulatory violations. Both were a result of pipeline failures. Affected soil was treated and disposed of immediately, and we invested $1.75 million to upgrade the pipeline and pond system to prevent a recurrence.
