New Five-Year Contract Reached Between
U.S. Borax and International Longshore & Warehouse Union, Local 20

WILMINGTON - Borax, the world's leading supplier of refined borates, announced that on Sunday, June 17, 2001, the company successfully reached a new five-year Collective Bargaining Agreement with the International Longshore & Warehouse Union, Local 20, which represents more than 100 hourly employees at Borax's Wilmington Operations.

Borax and the ILWU have been successfully negotiating fair and reasonable contracts for nearly 30 years. Agreement was reached on Sunday when the union negotiating team unanimously recommended the contract to its membership - and 94 percent of the members present voted to accept the offer.

"We worked long and hard to ensure our members got the benefits they deserve," said Gary Harvey, ILWU Local 20 President. "We believe that both parties negotiated in good faith and that the outcome of this process is a win-win situation for both the company and the people who keep it running."

"Borax is committed to understanding the needs and concerns of its employees - and to providing fair compensation and safe working conditions," said Malcolm Pitt, Plant Manager, U.S. Borax Inc., Wilmington Operations. "We believe this contract balances the needs of our employees with the needs of the business in an increasingly competitive market."

Wilmington Operations is Borax's primary North American shipping facility, and the largest exporter of high-value dry bulk goods out of the Port of Los Angeles. The facility also serves as a refinery for more than 14 borate products. A member of the port community since 1927, Wilmington Operations actively supports the community through partnerships with educational, civic and environmental organizations.
