Zinc borates are used primarily as a fire retardant synergist in plastics and rubber applications. They can also function as a smoke suppressant, afterglow suppressant, and anti-tracking agent.
Borax produces zinc borates that retain their water of hydration at high temperatures, enabling them to be used in polymers that require high processing temperatures. Their refractive index is also similar to most polymers, which means they retain considerable translucency while allowing the use of lower pigment loadings. Zinc borates can be used to produce wire and cable, wall coverings and coated fabrics, conveyor belts, electrical parts, carpeting, coatings, and automobile and aircraft interiors.
