Product Stewardship
As world leader in borate supply and science, Borax
takes responsibility for building knowledge and awareness
of the health and environmental effects and benefits
associated with its products. The company leads the industry
in conducting and commissioning research on borates to
ensure their safe handling and use, and completing Life
Cycle Assessments (LCA) to quantify the environmental
effects associated with manufacturing its major products.
Borax maintains full compliance with product information
and labeling requirements in each of the nearly 100
countries in which it does business. Click

our Product Stewardship Policy. Part of that policy is

communicate product information to customers, government
officials and the scientific community. Borax also
posts
research findings, technical literature and general
health and safety information about borates on its web
site.
In 2004, the United States Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) completed a multi-year review of more
than 200
borate health studies, many of them developed by
Borax. EPA concluded that people can safely consume
more than
twice the amount of boron previously considered
harmless. The company also completed an LCA of lumber
and wood
composites treated with borates. The study demonstrated
that borates’ benefits to wood's sustainability
far outweigh the environmental impact associated
with their production.
