Stakeholders
Borax defines stakeholders as people whose opinions and actions
can influence the company's success. Primary stakeholders
are delineated as those whose influence is the most immediate
and significant.
They include:
- Borax employees – in 2004, 1,371 people were
employed on
a full-time basis and 57 percent of those work on an hourly
basis. Of these hourly employees, 83 percent work in the
United States
under collective bargaining agreements as members of the
International Longshore & Warehouse Union.
- Customers,
distributors and agents in nearly 100 countries
- Borax's parent company, Rio Tinto
Other important stakeholders include:
- Community leaders and neighbors surrounding Borax operations
- Elected and appointed government
officials with jurisdiction over Borax operations, offices
and products
- Members of the academic and scientific community
with expertise and interest in borates
- Non-governmental organizations whose mission to protect
people and the environment coincides with Borax's commitment
to sustainable development.
